YouTube is launching an ad-free subscription service called YouTube Red, and forcing major contributors to, “sign-up, or else.” This mafia-type move by YouTube will ultimately benefit creators, but it also has major drawbacks for companies like ESPN who, because of other standing contracts, cannot sign a subscription service deal. Videos from major contributors will begin disappearing on the ad-supported free version. Publishers need to begin seriously thinking about where and how they distribute video content.
