The magazine industry is a chain comprised of a series of links. Content producers are the beginning of the chain with printers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and newsstands following. There is a substantial difference in how these pieces of the chain operate. More often than not there is significant misunderstanding between the different components, which in turn breeds suspicion of one another. Ignorance of operations leads to oversimplification and fear of exploitation.
This issue was recently highlighted in a lawsuit from Anderson News, a distributer, against the wholesalers, TNG and Hudson News. Joe Berger (@newsstandpromos) gives a detailed account of how this dynamic plays out on his blog.
